EuroDebt to help homeowners switch energy companies - 24/02/2009

EuroDebt, a debt-management provider, has launched a new service designed to help homeowners switch energy companies.

Families will be assisted by way of the company's Energy Switching Service which will help households cope with existing debt if they have fallen behind on their energy bill payments, while also helping them to access the best cheap energy rates on the market.

The company advises homeowners that a decision to switch gas and electricity supplier could result in annual savings of £300.

Kevin Still, director of the company, said: "By switching they (homeowners) may be able to get better flexibility in the method of payment to the utility provider, perhaps moving from upfront payment meters to monthly direct debit."

Pre-payment meters tend to be more expensive than direct debit arrangements as they carry a premium charge, despite usually being allocated to low-income customers.

Customers who are behind on their bill payments could make special arrangements with their energy supplier if they have a Debt Management Plan.

More than five million UK homeowners are currently thought to be living in fuel poverty.
