Gentoo to tackle high prices from energy suppliers through efficient homes - 06/04/2009

Gentoo, a Sunderland-based property firm, is setting out to offer cheap energy rates through the development of nearly 30 low-energy homes.

According to 24dash.com, the properties are to be built in Houghton-le-Spring near Sunderland and will use the German PassivHaus standard, which utilises methods such as passive solar gain and recently-developed materials to maximise insulation and promote heat retention.

A mechanical ventilation system is used to boost air quality and warms the home at the same time, removing the need for more traditional central heating set ups.

Ian Porter, managing director of Gentoo Sunderland, told the website: "This project gives us the opportunity to assist our customers with ever increasing fuel bills, which is especially tough in this difficult economic climate."

Energy savings of up to 85 per cent are possible using the PassivHaus standard, bringing annual estimated heating bills down to just £40.

Energy companies have been criticised recently for promoting energy efficiency by simply sending out millions of energy-saving light bulbs, although there is no evidence of widespread usage among homeowners.
