Most homeowners would be willing to switch energy providers in order to be more environmentally friendly.
A survey commissioned by the Renewable Energy Association, Friends of the Earth and the Co-operative Group found that 70 per cent of respondents would consider installing green energy systems such as small wind turbines or solar panels if they were paid enough.
The report, which questioned over 2,000 people, found that despite the broad appeal of green energy, many believe more can be done to make it more accessible.
The study's authors said the report's findings indicate that the government's plans to pay people to generate green business energy and domestic electricity are not attractive enough.
Andy Atkins, executive director of Friends of the Earth, said: "The public overwhelmingly wants the government to think big when it comes to small-scale renewable energy.
"Our homes, businesses and communities could become green power stations, but bigger government incentives are needed to make this a reality."
