Energy suppliers Iberdrola to build offshore wind farm in Glasgow - 04/03/2010

Energy suppliers Iberdrola plan to build a wind power base in Glasgow, it has been announced.

The company, which owns Scottish Power, will construct an offshore wind farm in the North Sea, which will be one of the largest in the UK and will have a capacity of almost 10,000 MW.

The Offshore Wind Division will be incorporated into Scottish Power Renewables, the company's UK business unit.

Iberdrola is expected to invest nine million euros between 2010 and 2012 to "consolidate its world leadership in the wind energy sector".

A spokesman for Iberdrola told the Glasgow Evening Times: "There are already about 20 people working for the division in Scotland now, but the number will be scaled up as projects mature over the next five or six years. These will be high-end engineering jobs."

Construction of the site is scheduled to begin in 2015.

Iberdrola Renovrables is based in 23 countries and installed capacity of almost 11,000 MW at the end of 2009.
