British Gas is leading energy suppliers in the modernisation of utility meters in the home, an expert has argued.
Director of energyhelpline.com Mark Todd said that the move by British Gas to introduce smart meters is positive for the consumer, but that it is likely to take time before the full benefits of the switch are noticed.
"I think customers will feel more informed. I think they'll have more confidence about their bills, but I think it is going to take time," he said.
Mr Todd added that the meters are at this stage being provided to approximately one-fifth of the company's customers, and full roll-out is likely to take until around 2020 to complete.
Currently, other energy suppliers are not operating on the same scale as British Gas with regards to introducing smart meters, he added, but announcements from rival providers may well be made in the near future, he said.
