Govt pledges £5m to develop UK cheap energy sector - 01/04/2010
The government has pledged around £5 million to help develop the UK's cheap renewable energy sector.
The funds will go primarily to the wind energy sector and will finance a new radar for a sizeable offshore wind farm and for micro wind turbine test pads.
Around £4 million will be diverted to the radar project by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), leading to the construction of the Sheringham Shoal wind farm off the Norfolk coast.
The DECC also announced a £750,000 grant for ten new wind turbine testing facilities at technology services company TUV NEL's Myershill test site in East Kilbride, Scotland.
Some of the funding will also go to research and development in order to improve the cheap energy efficiency of micro wind turbines.
Last October, the DECC said it will be funding a new radar interference research project aimed at eliminating radar interference from wind turbines.
