Popularity of gas energy 'depends on a number of factors' - 23/02/2011
Cheap gas customers might be surprised to hear that a number of factors affect the popularity of different types of gas.
According to Navin Kumar, editor of LNGOneWorld.com, there is no obvious leader when comparing liquefied natural gas (also known as FLNG) and shale gas, as it depends on geographical availability.
"While countries like the USA and Canada have huge proven reserves of shale gas there are only [a] handful of other areas where there are commercially feasible reserves. On the other hand, FLNG is also a new technology but hugely successful in its short stint," he noted.
"[The] way forward would be a mix of both energy sources with FLNG having its nose slightly ahead due to its flexibility and availability of technology to commercially develop even smaller fields."
Mr Kumar added that the biggest obstacle in the development of shale gas is that smaller fields cannot be installed commercially.
