UK 'needs cheap energy storage capacity' - 04/05/2011
It is becoming clear that the UK requires more storage capacity for surplus cheap energy, ITM Power has stated.
The technology company said it agreed with the Department of Energy and Climate Change's comments when it said: "In future we need greater electricity energy storage facilities . so that energy supplies can be sold or bought when required."
Graham Cooley, chief executive of ITM Power, pointed out that Denmark has a system whereby it exports excess green electricity generated from wind farms to Sweden or Norway to prevent wastage.
"The use of hydrogen electrolysis and storage to manage the grid means that we would never have to cease renewable energy production," he added.
The remarks come after it emerged that National Grid paid a total of £900,000 to energy suppliers to switch off their wind turbines for a few hours between April 4th and 5th this year in a bid to reduce surplus renewable energy.
