Bills 'could rise' after Germany announces closure of nuclear plants - 31/05/2011
Householders in the UK wanting to compare energy tariffs could see their bills increase in the wake of Germany's decision to shut down its nuclear reactors.
According to the Express, the effect of the closures on European markets could result in higher costs of domestic energy for people in Britain.
An unnamed trader told the newspaper: "Prices must go up to account for permanently lower capacity. Neighbouring Europe will have to price in the potential absence of German power in case of unfavourable supply situations."
Meanwhile, environmental lobby group Greenpeace has welcomed Germany's move and its executive director, John Sauven, said it shows countries do not need nuclear power to have a strong economy.
"Germany's renewable energy industry generates more electricity every year than all of the nuclear stations in the UK and they've also benefited with over a quarter of a million new clean energy jobs," he pointed out.
