UK energy price rises 'the highest in the EU' - 04/11/2011
Many people may be tempted to compare energy suppliers to find a cheap electricity and gas deal, as new figures have shown the UK has seen some of the biggest price rises in Europe.
According to figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), annual inflation in the UK climbed to 5.2 per cent in September, up from 4.5 per cent the previous month, with increases in gas and electricity bills the main driver for this.
The body noted consumer energy prices rose by 18.1 per cent during the month.
This was significantly higher than the overall average for the 34 OECD countries - which was 14.2 per cent - and the eurozone, where bills saw hikes of 12.4 per cent.
In fact, the only countries covered by the survey to see higher energy price rises were Iceland (22.6 per cent) and the US (19.3 per cent).
The problem of rising bills in the UK led to the government to hold a summit with energy suppliers last month, which resulted in consumers being encouraged to insulate their homes and compare tariffs in order to get a better deal.
