Consumers 'should beware of shopping centre energy deals' - 15/02/2012
Individuals looking to switch gas provider may wish to use an independent energy comparison service rather than relying on information directly from providers.
Researcher by consumer group Which? found salespeople for the Big Six firms operating in supermarkets and shopping centres are offering misleading and inaccurate information.
It noted that while domestic energy users are being quoted potential savings of between £20 and £142, in reality many people could be worse off by up to £311 if they accept these offers.
Executive director of Which? Richard Lloyd said: 'It's simply not good enough for energy salespeople to be quoting misleading individual savings to people who sign up to switch in supermarkets."
He added this is one of the key reasons why consumer confidence in energy suppliers is so low.
Recently, the consumer group found British Gas and E.ON are also still failing to offer their best deals over the phone, despite assurances they would improve these services.
