Crackdown on energy supplier green claims - 05/02/2009
Energy industry regulator Ofgem has advocated a crackdown on the way UK energy suppliers claim green credentials.
In response to consumer confusion on the matter, the regulator has called for an independent scheme to be set up whereby energy suppliers only claim specific green credentials if their environmental measures pass legal requirements.
There are many tariffs available on the market which claim to be environmentally-friendly to some degree, but the actual green benefits on offer differ quite dramatically.
Juliet Davenport, the chief executive of Good Energy, an energy supplier which provides 100 per cent green energy, welcomed the move, saying: "Good Energy has been calling for more formal guidelines on green supply for several years to allow customers to differentiate between genuine green tariffs and mere 'greenwash'."
Ofgem plans to implement the scheme within the next few months and has the support of all the major energy suppliers.
Many of the major energy suppliers have already invested in substantial renewable energy projects around the UK.
