Autism charity calls on chancellor for reduced pressure from energy suppliers - 16/04/2009
An autism charity has urged the chancellor to reach out to families affected by the condition by helping them enjoy better access to cheap energy.
The UK Autism Foundation (UKAF) is appealing for additional assistance to be announced when chancellor Alistair Darling reveals this year's budget on April 22nd.
Many families coping with autism live below the poverty line and have been badly affected by climbing food costs and increasing energy prices, while rising unemployment across the UK is making their situation more perilous.
Ivan Corea, chief executive of UKAF, said: "UKAF is calling for Chancellor Darling to increase the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance. He must help the poor."
Despite the crippling effects of the recession and the global downturn, UKAF is planning to build an advanced autism centre in London, which could raise the profile of the condition.
Oxfam recently called for renewed focus on technology such as renewable energy devices in a bid to address spreading poverty in the UK.
