People choosing to switch energy use to LED lighting could save - 18/06/2009

Firms looking for cheap business energy rates and homeowners seeking to reduce their bills could use new LED lights to tackle the issue.

Lamp manufacturer Megaman UK says it has developed a new LED Reflector light that can reduce energy usage by as much as 80 per cent compared to traditional light bulbs and could last 20,000 hours, while offering the same brightness as a 35W halogen bulb.

LED lights are already being used by a range of supermarkets and high street shops as a way of reducing costs and carbon footprints, but the new design could deliver even greater savings.

John Murphy, managing director of Megaman's UK operation, said: "We have minimised energy consumption and heat generation, while maximising operational life and delivering three times more light output than other LEDs for the same wattage."

He added that with the current emphasis on pursuing energy-efficiency, there is a huge global demand for light bulbs that reduce energy usage.

In related news, many of the UK's major energy companies have sent out free efficient light bulbs to homeowners in recent months.
