Cheap energy generation could create many jobs - 22/06/2009

The decision to switch energy supplies to cleaner alternatives such as nuclear and renewable generation could produce thousands of new jobs, reports the Press Association.

Unite, the largest union in the UK, is expected to say at a London conference that the growth of the energy sector could act as a major stimulus for the British economy and also provide more opportunities to export.

Officials from major energy companies RWE npower and Scottish Power are expected to attend the conference, as well as Lord Mandelson, the business secretary.

Dougie Rooney, national officer of Unite, told the news agency: "Nuclear power, clean coal and carbon capture technology are key to meeting our future energy needs while reducing CO2 emissions."

He added that as many as 10,000 skilled engineering jobs could be created in the coming years, making the UK a global hub of for workers in the worldwide sector.

EDF is leading nuclear redevelopment in the UK and the building of new reactors is likely to stimulate regional economies.
