EAC: Government failing to set cheap energy example - 06/08/2009
Business energy costs are not being reduced in Westminster and the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has criticised the government for failing to set an example.
Many government buildings lack even the most basic measures such as insulation or any kind of microgeneration facilities like solar panels or energy-efficient boilers, leading to higher carbon emissions and business gas and electricity costs.
Tim Teo, chairman of the EAC, said the government has done little to improve its own environmental performance and in some ways is actually getting worse.
Mr Yeo added: "Leadership on these issues is crucial - the government can't have one prescription for the country and another for its own operations."
The Treasury has introduced the best efficiency measures and has managed to reduce its carbon footprint by over 40 per cent, while at the other end of the scale the Department for Children, Schools and Families has achieved less than half this figure.
