Eco-home near Norwich could tackle energy supplier bills - 24/08/2009
People looking to compare energy bills and pursue more efficient living could find inspiration in an eco-home set up by a couple in Kirby Bedon near Norwich.
Architect Donal MacGarry, 67, and his wife have spent the past seven months making their 1930s home more efficient by setting up a wood-burning stove, installing solar heating systems and using recycled paper as insulation, reports Norwich Evening News 24.
The changes cost the couple about £70,000 and the modifications to the home included building a full extension on which solar panels were mounted.
Mr MacGarry told the paper: "I've always been interested in all aspects of building conservation and although sometimes it seems pointless doing small things, we have cut our energy consumption."
In the next few months members of the public will be able to have a look round as part of the Campaign to Protect Rural England's Green Buildings.
Government grants are available for vulnerable homeowners looking to make their property more energy-efficient.
