Prices from energy suppliers could be tackled by raising feed-in tariffs - 01/12/2009
Increasing feed-in tariffs on microgeneration equipment could convince more people to switch energy sources and install devices such as wind turbines.
According to environmental organisation Friends of the Earth, this course of action could enable the UK to generate six per cent of its national energy supply from small-scale renewable means by 2020, a figure that surpasses the current government target by four per cent.
The organisation said research commissioned by the Department of Energy and Climate Change shows 25 terrawatt hours of electricity could be generated by small-scale devices if the feed-in tariff return for consumers was raised to ten per cent.
Dave Timms, a Friends of the Earth energy campaigner, said: "The government must show that it is taking this issue seriously and improve its plans to pay people for generating their own clean, green power."
The government recently announced plans to remove the need for businesses and public buildings to get planning permission for microgeneration equipment, potentially making it easier to pursue cheap business energy costs.
