Energy suppliers British Gas to dish out free solar panels to schools - 05/07/2010
Energy suppliers British Gas have launched a new scheme to give away solar panels to schools in Britain.
Under the initiative, 750 schools across the country will be able to have the energy saving devices fitted free of charge so they can benefit from sustainable cheap energy.
Any excess electricity that schools generate, for example during the school holidays, will be able to be sold back into the grid to earn some extra money.
The scheme will provide schools with the opportunity to collectively save around 1,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, helping them to slash 20 per cent off their annual electricity bill.
Schools will have to visit the generationgreen.co.uk website to be in with a chance of winning free solar panels.
Katie Alloway, a spokesperson for British Gas, said: "From a school's perspective, financially [solar panels] can help them save money and cut their emissions, but the other side of the coin is that it really helps our children learn more about renewable energy and energy conservation."
