According to an article in the Independent, homeowners facing price hikes for cheap gas and electricity usage from British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy should take steps to lower their energy wastage in order to save money.
Closing curtains or shutters at dusk is one such way to conserve energy, the article states, and this is equally effective in reducing energy bills as fitting double glazing in period properties, according to the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust.
Insulating walls and lofts is another effective trick to trap energy and save money on cheap electricity bills, as around half of heat loss occurs through these parts of the house.
Householders could also switch energy supplier to find the best priced deal, but they are warned to act now before winter properly takes hold.
