British Gas brings in flexible payment options - 31/01/2011

Customers of energy suppliers might be able to switch their payment options under new rules.

British Gas consumers who have set up online direct debits could be eligible for the flexible payment scheme, which allows them to set the amount they wish to pay each month and even lets them pick two months of the year in which they pay nothing.

Ian Peters, managing director of energy at the giant, commented that customer feedback had led British Gas to implement the initiative.

"Unsurprisingly, one of the most pressing concerns was managing bills. That's why we're now offering our customers the chance to vary their payments online - and even take payment holidays if they need to. This is one of many changes we'll be making to the business this year," he explained.

It comes after British Gas started rolling out its smart meter installations, which are expected to be used by around two million domestic and business energy users by the end of 2012.
