Government to appoint fuel poverty tsar - 14/03/2011
The government is planning to appoint someone to ensure vulnerable households are protected by energy suppliers.
According to the Guardian, Professor John Hills of the London School of Economics is to be named 'fuel poverty tsar' this week.
He will be expected to champion the cause of those living in fuel poverty, officially defined as spending ten per cent or more of income on domestic heating.
In addition, Professor Hills will be entrusted with the task of ensuring that poorer households are not placed at the mercy of rising gas and electricity costs.
Figures from the National Energy Action group show that some 5.5 million households across England currently live in fuel poverty.
Consequences of living in such conditions include suffering psychological stress as well as physical illnesses such as respiratory or circulatory problems.
The charity believes that ultimately energy efficiency is the only way to reduce bills and is therefore supportive of such programmes.
