Ofgem has announced plans to make energy suppliers auction off as much as a fifth of their energy generation output.
A recent review from the energy industry regulator found that the sector is being "stifled" by complicated pricing and a lack of transparency.
The watchdog is also investigating the differing speeds with which the Big Six energy suppliers passed on falling wholesale gas and electricity prices but increased their energy tariffs when wholesale prices rose.
Commenting on the new proposals, energyhelpline.com director Aamir Baloch said: "This is a game-changing challenge to the way they operate.
We have been calling for greater simplification in energy bills for a long time and help hundreds of thousands of customers pick their way through the complexity of tariffs every year.
