Many mums 'do not understand energy bills' - 22/02/2012

One in three mums in the UK have admitted they do not understand the bills sent to them by their electricity and gas provider.

A survey conducted by E.ON and Mumsnet revealed nearly one in five parents do not read their bills at all, with 23 per cent of these saying it is because the documents are too complicated.

Additionally, 65 per cent do not understand the differences between the tariffs on offer and one in ten are unaware there may be cheaper deals available from their current energy supplier.

Chief executive and founder of Mumsnet Justine Roberts said: "Mums are responsible for paying the family bills in many households, so it's a concern that many don't even open the envelope, in some cases because they think that their bill is too complicated."

Recently, Labour's shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint called for domestic energy providers to make their bills more transparent so consumers can be confident they are not being ripped off.
