Whitelee Windfarm popular for visitors - 22/06/2012

Whitelee Windfarm, which helps deliver cheap electricity to homeowners, has received nearly a quarter of a million visitors.

It was the first windfarm in Scotland to join the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions, which has about 500 members.

The site was opened in September 2009 and has a £2 million visitor centre with interactive displays and exhibitions.

Project director at ScottishPower Renewables John Alexander said: "It is fantastic that people have shown so much interest in the windfarm and it has surpassed all of our expectations."

The site also has 90km of trails used for jogging and cycling.

A new report from an industry group set up by the government recently showed a reduction in the cost of building offshore windfarms is achievable by 2020, Reuters reported.
