Homeowners looking to switch gas and electricity could buy solar PV systems - 23/07/2009
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems could be more viable for homeowners opting for a different
energy supplier
as a result of a new government plan.
The UK low carbon transition plan, recently launched by energy secretary Ed Miliband, is to introduce feed-in tariffs, meaning homeowners will benefit financially from installing microgeneration equipment as they will be able to sell electricity to the grid, reports Materials Handling World.
Initiating the scheme has been designed to reach the government's target of having 1.5 million UK homes generating their own clean energy and selling on any surplus supplies.
Martin Cotterell, managing director of Sundog Energy, a leading provider of solar PV equipment based in Cumbria, told the website: "This proposal will radically change the economics of renewable energy, bringing down the time it takes a system to pay for itself, after which it becomes a net earner."
He added that homeowners who have taken the initiative and already installed microgeneration equipment may not qualify for the new scheme.
The government plans to insulate every home in the UK in the coming years to reduce energy bills through domestic efficiency.
