Scottish government launches study into sustainable cheap energy - 29/06/2010

The Scottish government has unveiled plans to set up a central loan fund to support sustainable cheap energy projects across the region.

Environment secretary Richard Lochhead has completed a consultation and launched a study into how energy-saving renewable projects north of the border can be funded and launched.

"It will be carried out by the Scottish Agricultural College in conjunction with Community Energy Scotland, who will report back to me in three months," he commented.

Speaking at the Scottish and Southern Energy reception at the Royal Highland Show, Mr Lochhead stressed the importance of more community-owned renewable energy projects and pointed out that study is aimed at highlighting the need for a government loan scheme to encourage local investment in the renewable sector.

The Scottish government's commitment to increasing the amount of electricity and heat generated from sustainable cheap energy sources is believed to be a crucial part of tackling climate change. The government's target is to generate 50 per cent of electricity and 11 per cent of heat from renewable sources by 2020.
