Renewable cheap energy 'marked for growth' - 12/07/2010
The renewable
cheap energy
sector is expected to witness growth over the next few years, according to RenewableUK.
Nick Medic, head of communications at the sustainable energy organisation, said the upward trend within the renewable energy sector can be attributed to Europe-wide carbon targets and a growing need for locally sourced energy.
Mr Medic revealed that the other reason renewable energy is marked for growth is that there is an increased need for security and
green energy
such as wind power provides that.
"What you can now see is offshore wind properly taking off," he said. "Even in countries that feel they have optimised their onshore resources, we are going to see a shift to offshore."
Mr Medic explained that places such as Germany, Denmark, Holland and Belgium are all considerably expanding their offshore wind capacity.
According to figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, by 2020, around 40 per cent of electricity will come from low carbon sources, renewables, nuclear and clean coal.
