Experts call for green investment bank to fund renewable cheap energy projects - 30/07/2010
Researchers at the University of Sussex have called for the creation of a local green investment bank to fund sustainable
cheap energy
projects in the area.
According to study by the Sussex Energy Group, such a bank would help overhaul the energy network in the UK, including the pipes and wires that enable the country's energy system to function, so it can cope with a rapid growth of renewable energy.
Dr Jim Watson, director of the Sussex Energy Group and lead author of the report, explained that the UK needs to step up its game if it is to meet the 15 per cent target for renewable energy by 2020.
"The coalition government needs to make it much easier for communities to generate their own renewable energy," he said.
Dr Watson added that the government also needs to couple the understandable focus on big technology solutions with more attention to local sustainable cheap energy projects.
