A green expert has advised Scottish first minister Alex Salmond against ruling out nuclear energy suppliers for the coming years.
Mr Salmond opposes the idea of nuclear expansion in Scotland but Lord Adair Turner, chairman of the Committee on Climate Change which is to act as a government advisory body, believes that all options should be considered to safeguard Scotland's energy future.
The chairman said that the pressures of combating climate change in the modern era meant nothing could be ruled out as a potential energy source, no matter how unpopular.
Lord Adair told the paper: "Certainly, if carbon capture and storage worked out much more costly than the best estimates now suggest, then it would be difficult to rule out new nuclear."
Scottish government officials are planning to use cleaner fossil fuel power stations employing carbon capture and storage techniques, alongside renewable energy technology.
Prime minister Gordon Brown supports nuclear redevelopment and new stations will be built over the next decade by French-owned energy supplier EDF.
