Energy suppliers in the UK need to "catch up" with other nations when it comes to going green, it has been claimed.
Chairman of the Cumbria Green Business Forum John Barwise said that there has been "significant underinvestment" in the UK power sector in the 21st century and steps need to be taken to rectify this situation.
"We desperately need to rebuild the UK's power industry and to invest now in training and skills, especially in new technologies, to ensure a sustainable power resource in the UK for future generations," said Mr Barwise.
He also noted that much of the renewable green energy technology currently used in the UK comes from overseas, as do the skilled engineers needed to install such technologies.
His comments follow claims from chief executive of the Energy and Utility Skills Council Tim Balcon that there is a need to invest in training as the power industry develops new technologies.
