Renewable Energy Centre: UK needs cheap energy nuclear power - 02/11/2009

Consumers in the UK should be able to switch energy to nuclear power as well as renewable sources in the coming years, according to the Renewable Energy Centre.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said renewable energy should play a major part in the UK's energy future, but that nuclear power should also have a big role as it is cleaner than using fossil fuels such as coal and gas and is much safer than many people think.

She added the UK needs to make significant progress in relation to the development of wind farms to help plug the energy gap that is threatened by the decommissioning of several power stations in the coming years.

The spokeswoman said: "It is important that the UK does not rely wholly on any one source of energy but has a sensible mix which not only produces clean energy but also enables the UK to have a secure energy supply."

Six new nuclear power stations need to be built in the UK before 2030, according to a recent report from the CBI.
