People could be encouraged to compare energy prices from suppliers with news that the Core Cities Group is to launch a new efficiency scheme.
The group comprises eight major regional cities including Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds and Newcastle city council announced a collective effort will be made to reduce carbon emissions, which in turn could result in cheap energy rates.
Improving the energy efficiency of buildings will be the first priority and the group will work with the Greater London Authority and the Clinton Climate Initiative to achieve this.
John Shipley, leader of Newcastle city council, said: "This gives us the chance to demonstrate our commitment to addressing climate change, show leadership and show that we are acting together to reduce carbon emissions across all our cities on a big scale."
More than 40 buildings in London are already being retrofitted to reduce their emissions and improve their energy efficiency ratings.
Cavity wall insulation is one of the best ways to make buildings more efficient.
