'Switch energy providers to save money' - 05/05/2010

Consumers have been urged to switch energy tariffs in order to reduce their bills and save money.

According to price comparison website energyhelpline.com, by switching to the cheapest online tariff, consumers will be able to save £300 or more a year.

The site pointed out that households on standard energy tariffs have been paying an average of over £500 for gas and electricity in the first quarter of this year.

Moreover, almost half a million British Gas customers are on the verge of higher charges when their fixed price protection plans come to end.

In order to reduce these costs, consumers can compare energy tariffs and switch to options that are more cost-effective, particularly direct debit online plans, which tend to be the cheapest.

A number of energy suppliers also provide consumers with rebates of up to £80 when they switch energy providers.

Last week, energy suppliers Ovo announced a price increase on the Ovo New Energy fixed online tariff, making the company no longer the cheapest provider on the market.
