There are a number of simple steps homeowners can take to improve the cheap energy efficiency of their homes, an expert has said.
Emma Thompson, from energy suppliers E.ON, said mere "behavioural changes" such as carrying out insulation of wall cavities can significantly improve efficiency and can help reduce fuel bills.
She pointed out that those who carry out insulation typically see a return on their investment within the first year and save about a third on their heating bills.
There are a number of other simple steps people can take to reduce their energy usage such as making the most of natural light, Ms Thompson said.
"Make sure your curtains are open on a sunny day; this will heat your room," she explained.
"Try not to use your tumble dryer, especially at this time of year when you can hang your washing outside."
Householders were also advised to encourage their children to play outside when the weather is good, instead of playing indoors on games consoles that consume energy.
