Defra launches online business energy monitoring tool - 05/08/2010

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has launched an online tool which allows its real-time business energy use to be viewed by visitors to its website.

Online visitors will now be able to track the department's energy consumption throughout the year with the updates posted on the Defra website every five seconds.

A range of essential information alongside energy consumption will be viewable, such as carbon emissions and related costs.

A spokesman for the department said the new tool will enable Defra to be more transparent about the amount and cost of energy use within the department.

"The valuable energy performance data generated will help to raise awareness amongst Defra staff and provides a further incentive to reduce our energy use," he said.

Defra is the latest government department to make its energy use publicly available, following the lead set by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Home Office.
