Energy suppliers are showing an increasing interest in solar panels as part of their energy generating efforts, a new survey reveals.
According to a report from Gartner and the Solar Electric Power Association, energy suppliers across Europe view solar panels, along with onshore wind and biomass, as among the key sources of cheap renewable energy in the foreseeable future.
System costs for photovoltaics have decreased by 30 per cent over the last two years, which has given energy suppliers an added impetus to harness the power of sustainable energy, Gartner said.
In Germany alone, three-quarters (75 per cent) of energy suppliers said they are currently using solar panels as part of their energy resource portfolio.
Alfonso Velosa, research director at Gartner, said photovoltaic solar systems are a cost-effective way of adding distributed and central generation sources.
"PV systems are attractive to many organisations and individuals as they can be designed relatively easily, in a wide range of sizes and to fit in many different locations," he said.
