ScottishPower warns of potential skills gap in energy industry - 06/04/2011

Consumers wanting to compare energy tariffs might be interested to hear that ScottishPower has called for new qualified engineers to join the energy industry.

The energy supplier noted that the cheap energy sector is set to see more technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, so professionals are required to oversee these changes.

Added to this is Ofgem's calculation that £200 billion will need to be invested in the UK's cheap energy infrastructure in the next decade and it is important that the right people are employed in the industry.

Frank Mitchell, director of ScottishPower Energy Networks, commented: "With many of our current engineers due to retire in the next few decades, there is a potential skills gap emerging in this sector.

"Scotland and the UK has a proud history of leading the world in engineering innovation and we want to encourage younger generations to take up relevant courses and grasp the opportunities that will be available as we move to a low carbon economy," he added.
