Householders who want to save money on their bills by becoming more energy efficient could take up a new offer from British Gas.
The energy supplier is offering consumers £400 to trade in their old boiler for a new, more effective model as part of its scrappage scheme, This Is Money reported.
Some 3.5 million boilers around the UK could be G-rated and therefore eligible for the scheme. If a boiler is gas-powered, more than 15 years old and has a constantly burning pilot light, it is probably G-rated.
Inefficient boilers can add £225 to annual domestic energy bills, according to the Mirror.
Replacing old devices with A-rated boilers should see utility bills come down, although This Is Money said householders will probably not see a financial return on the full price of a new boiler for eight years.
Participants in the British Gas scheme do not have to be customers of the energy supplier and need not sign up to any other service or tariff in order to take part.
