Ofgem offers safeguards to energy meter customers - 04/07/2011

Householders who are having smart meters fitted in their homes so they can monitor their cheap energy usage are being offered improved protection from Ofgem.

The industry watchdog has outlined a number of ways to guard against consumers having problems when they go to switch energy suppliers and having their utility deals being changed by providers without warning.

Ofgem is also reminding energy suppliers that they must offer customers all relevant information about the information they will collect when installing a smart meter, as well as inform consumers of their rights relating to the data collection.

It comes as part of the government's plans to roll out smart meters to homes and business energy clients in 2014, although some energy companies have already started issuing the devices to their customers.

The regulator said its next round of suggestions relating to consumer safeguards will be published later this summer.
