Family budgets squeezed by higher energy bills - 04/07/2011

Householders who are on a tight budget should compare energy deals to see if they can find a cheaper option.

According to Joanna Parsley, associate director of Credit Action, family budgets have already been squeezed by the higher rate of VAT and the increasing cost of living.

"If energy prices rise further, then the squeeze on family finances will only get tighter," she pointed out.

However, it is "hard to say" whether energy hikes has led to more households getting into debt, but for families who are using credit to pay for their bills it could be a "sign of difficulty".

"For families that are worried about their energy bills rising and fearing they won’t be able to keep up with payments, it’s important that they talk to their supplier and seek free and independent advice if they need to," Ms Parsley added.

Her comments come ahead of an anticipated price increase from British Gas.
