Home-generated renewable energy 'is not reaching its potential' - 02/08/2011
Cheap electricity customers should pay more attention to the "huge untapped potential" in their homes to cut energy wastage and boost cheap energy production.
This is the view of GreenEnergyNet's Mark Ruskell, who wrote in the Scotsman about installing renewable energy generating equipment in properties.
He said a survey by his website found nearly two-thirds of people in Scotland are interested in fitting green energy equipment, such as solar panels, heat pumps and wood fuel boilers, but for many, cost is the biggest barrier to investment.
"There is a real danger that insufficient incentives, together with consumer confusion, means ordinary Scots will end up facing higher than average energy bills and miss out on the chance to benefit from the renewables revolution," Mr Ruskell wrote in the newspaper.
The government's Green Deal could offer a solution to these problems by helping households reduce energy use and take up renewable energy generation, he said, adding that otherwise, "the future of renewables may remain in our hills and seas rather than our homes".
