New gas power plant 'to power one million homes' - 05/08/2011

Householders in the south-east could soon receive their cheap energy supplies from a new gas power station in Coryton, Essex.

Energy minister Charles Hendry has given the green light to the plant, which will supply one million homes across the region once construction is complete.

"With a quarter of our electricity-generating capacity shutting down over the next ten years as older plants close, new power stations like Coryton will play a crucial part in the country's energy mix as we make a move towards a low carbon economy," the minister explained.

"There is also a major opportunity in the long term for gas power stations like this to be fitted with abatement technology," he said, adding that the plant will be built carbon capture ready.

This means carbon dioxide emissions generated by the facility can be captured and eventually transported for offshore storage.

Meanwhile, consumers searching for cheap electricity deals might be pleased to hear that televisions are, on average, 60 per cent more efficient than they were five years ago, according to research by Sust-it.
