Energy secretary Chris Huhne has spelled out the case for renewable power in a speech in Manchester, which may interest people looking to go green and get a cheap electricity deal.
Addressing the Renewable UK conference, the minister said the adoption of technologies such as wind and solar power will be vital if the UK is to do its part to tackle the "manmade disaster" of climate change.
He noted that, while the country is only responsible for two per cent of the world's carbon emissions, "if we grasp the opportunity now our businesses and economy can be much more than two per cent of the solution."
Mr Huhne also criticised the "faultfinders ... climate sceptics and armchair engineers" who insist renewables will not be able to meet the UK's growing energy needs and promised the shift to green power could spark a "third industrial revolution".
Earlier this week, a report from the WWF suggested the UK could get as much as 90 per cent of its electricity from renewables by 2030 if barriers to investment are removed and innovation is encouraged.
