Salmond dismisses green investment warning - 03/11/2011
People in Scotland looking for cheap energy deals may be interested to hear that first minister Alex Salmond has dismissed a report warning companies against investing in green energy projects in the country.
Recently, a study by Citigroup claimed a referendum on independence for the nation would create uncertainty in the market and a split from the rest of the UK would leave the nation unable to provide the subsidies needed to pay for its ambitious renewable strategy.
This could therefore lead to significantly higher bills for energy customers in the country, it warned.
However Mr Salmond rejected these claims, pointing out that even if Scotland was to declare independence, it would still export its green electricity to England and Wales, which would provide the necessary funding for the plans.
Under the Scottish government's proposals, the country is aiming to generate the equivalent of 10 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources such as wind and marine power generation by 2020.
