More stars support winter fuel giving campaign - 19/12/2011

A growing number of famous faces have offered their support to a campaign to help vulnerable elderly people get cheap energy.

Run by the Community Foundation Network, the Surviving Winter initiative encourages financially secure individuals to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to those more in need.

It has now won the support of Sir Bruce Forsyth, who joins a host of other famous faces such as Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Terry Wogan.

The Strictly Come Dancing host said: "I'm so delighted to be supporting this campaign, which can help save lives this winter. To think of people dying of cold in this country because they can't afford enough heating is really distressing."

Director-general of Saga Dr Ros Altmann added with the winter freeze arriving, the falling temperatures could present a real problem for millions of older people around the UK.

She explained last winter, over 25,000 elderly individuals were estimated to have died from the cold.

Last week, it was stated by Alliance Trust Savings that retirees are still struggling with a higher rate of inflation than other age groups, with increased gas and electricity prices a major cause of this.
