Vulnerable energy users urged to seek assistance - 03/02/2012

Individuals looking to get cheap gas supplies to help them cope with the cold weather have been urged by the government to see if they are eligible for extra assistance in keeping their home warm.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has written to 675,000 elderly and vulnerable people across the UK to try and raise awareness of the Warm Front scheme.

Last week, Consumer Focus and National Energy Action stated many eligible people are not taking advantage of this help, as it is set for a £30 million underspend this winter.

It was noted by the DECC that while 21,000 households have received grants so far this financial year, there is the capacity remaining to assist up to 16,000 more before the end of March.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker added: "The cold weather we're experiencing at the moment reminds everyone how important it is to have a cosy home, so I'm urging anyone who’s eligible for a Warm Front grant to pick up the phone."
