UK 'must improve' complex energy policies - 19/03/2012

The government needs to put in place policies that will help people easily switch gas and electricity supplier and secure cheap energy deals, it has been stated.

Dominic Raab, Conservative MP for Esher and Walton, wrote in the Daily Telegraph that hard-pressed families are being hurt by a "myriad of tariffs and subsidies", which are pushing up bills for consumers.

He warned that as fuel poverty has tripled since 2003, low and middle-income families will be the hardest by this, so steps must be taken swiftly to improve the system.

This may be vital, as the independent Hills Report into the issue claimed last week the problem is likely to get worse over the next few years without action.

Mr Raab said the "current tapestry of costly tariffs and subsidies needs to be torn up" as the system in place at the moment is not making renewable energy more efficient.

The medium-term aim must be to wean the UK off expensive and unstable fossil fuels from Russia and the Middle East, he continued, highlighting nuclear power as the most cost-effective way to meet the country's electricity needs.
