Performing an energy comparison in order to find a better deal could be a good start for people looking to secure cheap electricity and gas prices.
This is according to Cathy Debenham, founder of YouGen, who said householders need to take action to minimise the impact of expected price rises later this year.
Recently, British Gas warned domestic energy bills are likely to climb as a result of higher wholesale costs, as well as other expenses.
Ms Debenham said: "Changing energy supplier makes sense as a first step for reducing bills, especially if you have never changed before."
However, she added people should also consider making improvements to their home as a way of securing lower bills for years to come.
The expert said there are currently some great deals to be had on loft and cavity wall insulation, which will have an immediate effect on the warmth and comfort of a home and should pay back their installation costs within a year or two.
