2010 carbon reduction target 'missed' - 12/05/2011

The UK missed its target of reducing carbon emissions by 20 per cent in 2010, a new report has suggested.

Analysis from the Cambridge Econometrics thinktank showed that a rise in emissions last year offset the reductions achieved in 2008 and 2009.

It is estimated that there was a two per cent rise in carbon emissions in 2010, caused by energy use in households, businesses and industry.

Report co-editor Professor Paul Ekins of the UCL Energy Institute said that the failure to meet the previous Labour administration's targets "is an indication of the policy difficulty of reducing these emissions, and therefore of the policy stringency that is required for effective emission reduction".

"In this context it is clear that stronger policies will be required to meet the carbon budgets for the 2020s and beyond," he added.

Using green energy from renewable sources is seen as the way forward, and this is becoming more and more accessible for gas and electricity users.
